Lotus Elise S1 Ex-Trophy Car

This S1 Elise is an ex-Elise Trophy car that has been converted for road use, it has been fully upgraded from the ground up and retains the epic, zingy K-Series engine which now reliably produces 181bhp (down-tuned for its racing class), with capability for over 200bhp. We’ve owned this car for over 3 years and have completed just over 2,000 miles in it, during our ownership we have had the clutch replaced along with a new slave cylinder and refreshed gearbox oil. The car is completely HPI clear and will be presented with a fresh MOT for the new owner.



Finished in Norfolk Mustard Yellow with a black interior, this Elise is an early example, being first registered as ‘P111 SED’ on 14th December 1996. It was seemingly used as a daily driver, racking up over 94,000 miles by 2011 before being built into a full-on racecar. The build was substantial (costing over £21,000 in parts alone in 2013) and created an extremely competitive car, full details below:


Suspension/brakes/body:

New wishbone bushes, wheel bearings and ball-joints all-around; Hofmanns ARB Nitron 1-way dampers with 650/750 springs; Hofmanns ARB with Nylatron mounts; EliseParts lightweight steering arms; rose-jointed track-rod ends; OEM steering uprights; EliseParts rose-jointed rear toe links; AP 295mm front discs & EliseParts aluminium belled rear discs (floating); Rota Slipstream wheels; EliseParts alloy radiator; quick-fill fuel pipe & quick-release fuel cap; standard S1 body with Kelsport kevlar single-skin hardtop; Custom Cages T45 6-point cage; Corbeau LE passenger seat with carbon shell driver’s seat to accommodate for taller drivers; 6-point harnesses on both seats


Drivetrain:

Engine built from a 19,000 mile TF160; MS2 head with VVC hydraulic followers; PTP stainless valves (VHPD sized); PTP valve springs; Newman PH3 cams; Piper vernier pulleys; 52mm throttle body; Janspeed 4-2-1 manifold with 5” silenced cat pipe; EliseParts lightweight silencer; EliseParts lightweight flywheel; Race TF clutch plate and cover (since changed to standard MGF160 clutch for usability); B4BP gearbox with Type B Torsen LSD; EliseParts motorsports gear linkage.



The car completed approximately 10 hours of racing before it was sold on to an owner with a different plan. The next owner (from 2017 - 2023) decided he wanted the car to be fully road-legal so that it could be driven to and from track days. He endeavoured to do this with the help of Hillspeed (motorsports team), who subsequently went over the car with a fine-tooth comb to ensure it was safe, usable and reliable. It had a full brake overhaul, full service, suspension rebuild and new front loom wiring amongst other things. All of their work (detailed in various invoices) was completed in January 2023 and cost over £6,200, the car didn’t see much use before the owner decided to sell it due to his increasing age, which is where we came along.


Today, the car is in a cosmetic condition of which you’d expect for an ex-racecar, there are battle scars on every panel and scuffs on most corners, there are a few crazing marks and a couple of medium-sized cracks in the fibreglass (see photos), the black paint on the roof has faded, there’s no boot lining and the bonnet and engine lid are secured with appropriate pins. For us, this tatty racecar aesthetic, blended with the mechanical and structural prowess of this car is what makes it great. The car drives perfectly, obviously it is loud in all the good ways, but there are no unwanted noises from the suspension or the drivetrain. We believe it’s the most-exhilarating driving experience you can get in this price range and far, far above it. A go-kart for the road.
